PhD ’20, Wind Engineering, Western University; BESc [Distinction] ’15, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Western University is a full-time wind impacts researcher with NTP. His main responsibility is researching and implementing new cutting-edge technology for NTP including drones, LiDAR, and street view cameras.
Ph.D. student, Software Engineering, Western University is an NTP researcher with considerable knowledge in machine learning, image processing, and high-performance computing. His research focuses on building software systems to automate the complex and labour-intensive processes of analyzing severe storms.
Lead researcher in the Northern Tornadoes Project, the ImpactWX Chair in Severe Storms Engineering, and a professor in Western University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Dr. Turkel is a professor of History at Western and internationally recognized for his innovative work in digital history. He uses machine learning, text mining, and computational techniques in his study of the histories of science, technology and environment, drawing on many decades of programming experience. Author of Spark from the Deep (Johns Hopkins, 2013), The Archive of Place (UBC, 2007) and the open access textbook Digital Research Methods with Mathematica, (2nd ed 2019). His current research focuses on the use of generative AI in historiography, history and theory, and historical methods. Dr. Turkel is a member of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada (2018-25).
