Say hi to Eliot Hong, past USC Comms Officer 2011-12 and seasoned marketer who loves to build up the communities he’s part of. He’s been able to forge a diverse career in marketing since his time at Western, and has been able to utilize his experience and love for technology to work in a field that was only a dream when he was a kid – game development! Graduating with a Bachelor in Management Organizational Studies (BMOS’11), he’s spent time working for marketing agencies, NHL, CFL, and currently works as a Senior Community Manager at Relic Entertainment on the recently launched game Age of Empires IV. When not working (or playing games for “research”) you can catch him cooking, playing Magic: the Gathering, seeking the next new favourite food spot, or cheering on the Lakers.
Why type of skills/knowledge did you gain from your role with the USC that has helped in your career journey?
The most direct skills and knowledge I got from my role with the USC was understanding how to work with stakeholders – both internally and externally. Working in coordination within the USC and with the Western Administration – on top of different student faculties, organizations, and clubs – means there’s a lot of navigating between groups. It really understated the importance of honest, transparent communication.
Was that anything unique that you took away from your USC position that you haven’t gained from other jobs?
Honestly, Robert’s Rules! Having order, an agenda, and giving people moments to speak make for efficient, effective meetings
What advice would you give to a student who is on the fence about running in the USC election?
Go for it! You get to work closely with staff that are experienced, knowledgeable, and best of all, great mentors. You get to work cross-dynamically with other teams, offices, and companies; while also getting to work directly with the amazing student body and admin at Western! Best of both worlds and a great chance to spread your wings and learn before heading onto your next career journey!
What’s the one thing you miss most about Western/the USC?
Can I say the bagels? Having access to bagels directly downstairs is something you don’t know you had until you’ve left Western and the USC.
Jokes aside, I really miss the camaraderie with the fellow board members and elected members of the USC, and the unified goal of trying to do something amazing each and every day for the student body. Advocating for your fellow students is something that continues to guide me even to this day on engaging with fellow coworkers, leadership, and – whenever I get opportunities – to provide mentorship.
