Hi there,
I was wondering if you (the USC) have anything like a peer support phone line? Or is there one provided by any group on campus, or by the university itself? When I was at the University of Ottawa, they had a phone line where students could call in and get a wide range of information whether it was where a certain building on campus was, providing support to someone who was homesick, or more complex issues like arguing with roommates or where to go for mental health support. This is some info about the UOttawa help line: http://sfuo.ca/services/peerhelp/en/services/pspl.html
The nice thing about this was that the people you spoke with were just like you, fellow students. In a way, it provided a unique comfort. It also was a great opportunity for volunteers to get that kind of counselling experience in a sense. And all volunteers were fully and properly trained. I enjoyed my year of volunteering with them. I’m not sure if there would be any available funding for such a project, but if you have any information, that’d be great! I would love to help spearhead such an initiative for next year if there is a need/interest (that is, if I am accepted to attend here next year- I’m hoping!)
Thanks,
Christine
I’m happy to report that Marissa Joffre, the USC Vice-President Campus Issues, has been working on providing a telephone support hotline for Western students. We’ll post details to the website as they are finalized, but if you have any questions or would like to participate, please contact her at uscvpci@uwo.ca
